In my opinion it depends on the situation. It's more often that the book is better. Marley and me movie pales before the book, but book Fight Club Chuck Palahnuik is nothing compared with the movie.

As for me, I prefer first read the book,you can imagine yourself all the moments, plot, because in movie sometimes the most impressionable moments let down. For a example one of my favorite book is "P.S. I love you", when a read it I understood that this book is full of really cute, passionate, unforgettable moments. But I I was really shocked, when I watched movie.For person, who didn't read it, will not understand the plot, and the most important details wasn't present.
